Scribe acquires The Newcomer by Laura Elizabeth Woollett

We are very excited to announce that Scribe has acquired UK and Commonwealth rights in The Newcomer by Laura Elizabeth Woollett.

The new novel from the author of Beautiful Revolutionary — which was shortlisted for the 2019 Prime Minister’s Literary Awards — is inspired by a real-life murder on Norfolk Island.

Set on a tiny, isolated island off the coast of Australia, The Newcomer examines in close detail the murder of a young woman, Paulina, and the devastating effect the murder has on Paulina’s mother, Judy. The story is told in chapters that alternate perspectives between these two women, and which span the years leading up to Paulina’s death as well as much of Judy’s life after Paulina is killed.

Associate Publisher Marika Webb-Pullman says: ‘Unlike a lot of crime and true crime, the point of The Newcomer isn’t to explore a killer’s psychology or to try and understand his actions. Laura’s project in this book — as with all of her work — is to examine the myriad impacts of crime, to fully characterise the “victim”, in her all flawed humanity, and to look at the ways in which violence against women ripples out into the society that so often sanctions it. It’s a stunning achievement, and I’m thrilled to be working with her again.’

Scribe acquired rights in The Newcomer from Grace Heifetz at Left Bank Literary. Scribe will publish The Newcomer in July 2021.
