RIP Peter Matthiessen

We were deeply saddened by the news that the acclaimed author Peter Matthiessen has passed away at the age of eighty-six. Scribe will publish his final book, In Paradise, in Australia and New Zealand on 30 May 2014.

Inspired by Matthiessen’s own experience at a Zen meditation retreat at Auschwitz in the 1990s, In Paradise is a profoundly moving novel that is the culmination of an extraordinary career. It raises provocative questions, such as how beauty and joy can emerge out of horror; what responsibility comes with bearing witness to tragedy; and what insights will be lost as the last survivors of, and witnesses to, the death camps pass away.

Matthiessen is the only writer to have won the American National Book Award more than once — he won it in two nonfiction categories for The Snow Leopard, published in 1978, and in fiction three decades later for Shadow Country. A full obituary can be read here.
