Two Scribe titles at the 2023 VPLAs

Scribe is thrilled to share that we have two books recognised in the 2023 Victorian Premier’s Literary Awards.

Congratulations to Ben Schneiders and Sam Wallman for the recognition of their books in this year’s nonfiction category, Schneiders’ investigative book Hard Labour has been highly commended, and Wallman’s graphic novel Our Members Be Unlimited appearing on the shortlist for the award.

Of Our Members Be Unlimited, the judges remarked that: ‘The history of the union movement, as told through both historical detail and personal experience, can be expected to be an informative if dull read. Yet, by applying the innovative artistry of an underground comix sensibility with a deeply impassioned belief in the need and worth of unions, Sam Wallman has created something rare and wonderful. The panel design and page layouts combine to give each section its own emotional resonance, and Wallman’s art and writing feel breathlessly compulsive. Reading Our Members Be Unlimited is an experience, one that rewards with each revisit.’

The winner of each category and the overall Victorian Prize for Literature will be announced on 2 February 2023. Congratulations again to the authors.

From Britain to Bangladesh, from the first union of the 18th century to today, from solidarity in Walmart China to his own experiences in an Amazon warehouse in Melbourne, comics journalist Sam…

Hard Labour

A startling investigation of how some of Australia’s best-known companies have abused their power to systematically underpay their workers in recent years.

Whether it’s at McDonald’s, Coles, 7-Eleven, Woolworths, the major banks, high-end restaurants, or on farms, wage theft has become endemic. Billions of dollars have been unlawfully taken from workers at countless businesses, large and small.

Hard Labour is an examination of why this has occurred and what it says about inequality and power in twenty-first century Australia. It tells the stories of individual workers, temporary migrants, and those…
