Scribe has acquired WEL rights in Tom Doig’s third full-length book, We Are All Preppers Now, a work of narrative nonfiction that will examine the (not-so-) fringe practices of survivalism and ‘Doomsday prepping’ in New Zealand and around the world.
Doig said, ‘I'm over the moon to have signed with Scribe — especially at such a fraught moment in publishing (and world) history. For years now, Marika Webb-Pullman and the Scribe team have been publishing some of the most exciting titles in Australia; I'm looking forward to working with them to produce something special.’
Scribe associate publisher Pullman said: ‘I've been following Tom's work for years, and I'm thrilled to have this opportunity to work with him. We Are All Preppers Now promises to be a brilliant book that synthesises Tom's many talents and interests, at a time when questions of how we can prepare for our future — and, indeed, what it is that we're preparing for — have never seemed so urgent.’
Doig has written two books about the 2014 Hazelwood mine fire disaster: Hazelwood (PRH, 2020) and The Coal Face (Penguin, 2015, winner of the Oral History Victoria Education Innovation Award). He has also written a humorous travel memoir, Mörön to Mörön: Two men, two bikes, one Mongolian misadventure (Allen & Unwin, 2013). He is currently the contributing editor of Living with the Climate Crisis: Voices from Aotearoa (Bridget Williams Books, forthcoming).
Rights were acquired at auction from Martin Shaw at Shaw Literary. Scribe will publish in Australia and the UK in late 2021–early 2022.
