President Macron visits Australia

Mr Macron's three-day trip beginning on 1 May will focus on Australia's submarine program and negotiations for an Australia-EU free trade agreement, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said on Wednesday.

Malcolm Turnbull said the two leaders will discuss Australia’s $50 billion submarine program, which is being built by French company Naval Group.

‘We will also discuss the next steps toward launching negotiations of an Australia-EU Free Trade Agreement, which will embody our commitment to open markets and a liberal rules-based trading system, while significantly strengthening our trade and investment ties,’ the Prime Minister said.

Mr Turnbull labelled France was one of Australia’s ‘oldest and closest friends’.
